Book Sale FAQs

Is the sale in more than one room? What's in each room?

The sale takes place in 3 spaces on the 2nd floor of the library: the Friends room (just off the vestibule), the lobby, and the Bonsignore Room. Access to the Bonsignore Room is via the lobby.

    • Most adult non-fiction/academic and specially priced books are in the Friends Room.
    • The Bonsignore Room contains all children's books and YA, adult fiction, cook books, gardening and certain other adult non-fiction, plus puzzles, games, CDs, miscellaneous and DVDs.
    • Carts with special items like vintage books may be placed anywhere, including the lobby. On Friday night, DVDs are in the lobby.

Is the bake sale every day?

Our Bake Sale happens on Saturdays during the full sale hours. If anything's left, we will offer it on Sunday, sometimes marked down.

Do you offer markdowns on Sundays?
We do offer some markdowns on limited items, typically mass market (small) paperbacks, depending on what inventory is left.

What form of payment do you take?
We take cash and checks made out to Friends of the Medford Public Library. We also take credit cards, Venmo, PayPal with a $10 minimum purchase (including membership).

Can I get a receipt?
We will gladly give out paper receipts by request.

Important Info about Friday Night Sales Part 1

Friday night sales are from 6:30-8:30 and are for members* of the Friends of the Medford Public Library only. That means all shoppers must have an active annual or lifetime membership or join at the sale.

  1. Doors will open for shoppers at 6:30. The library closes at 6:00, and all shoppers must wait outside from 6-6:30.
  2. You must verify your membership or join either before doors open at 6:30 or at check-out when you pay for your books. Here's how that works:

    • We will have a table set up outside from 5:30-6:30 for member check-in. You can verify your membership or complete the membership form if you need join/renew. Once cleared, active members will get a wristband or a hand stamp allowing you to bypass the membership table at check-out. People who need to join will hold onto their membership form until check-out.
    • At check-out, you will go to the membership section at the cashier station first. A volunteer will check you in by verifying your status or taking your membership form, and if you need to pay for membership then a cashier will total your purchase & take payment for both your books and your membership. If you have a wristband/hand stamp, you will bypass this step and show your band/stamp to the cashier.
    • For those who need to join, you can save time by filling out the membership form at any time and holding it until check-out. Once the sale starts, please do not ask to pay for membership prior to check-out. Please print clearly on the form!

*Membership is not the same as having a library card. Please see our Join/Renew page for more info.

Important Info about Friday Night Sales Part 2

Our Friday sales are a popular for local members looking for a few books and for teachers, book resellers and others looking to buy a lot of books at once. To ensure a safe and pleasant shopping experience for all, we have a strict “no hoarding” policy as follows:

  • Individuals are allowed to fill one working box (or shopping bag) at a time. Books may not be piled, stacked, hidden, or otherwise hoarded outside of the one working box. Duffel bags may not be allowed as working bags, depending on size. You may not claim an entire shelf. You may not remove all books from a shelf to sort through.
  • Scanners are allowed, and shoppers are expected to be respectful and not block other shoppers.
  • Once you have filled a bag or box and need to sort through the books again, take them to the sorting tables provided and leave your discards on the reshelving cart.

  • Once a working box is ready for purchase, you must store it in the book-holding room and start using a new working box. You may store as many boxes as you want in the holding room. Volunteer runners are available to help carry full boxes and bags to the holding room.
  • Write your full name (no initials or first/last name only -- we do have shoppers with the same names or initials!) on the provided index cards and tape/put it in the bag or box.
  • All books stored in the holding room are considered SOLD.  They will be tallied and held until you are ready to pay. This count is final for each box.

  • Staff will be happy to assist you in the holding room when you are ready to pay for all your books.

Any questions, just ask a volunteer.
